"An Enemy Called Average," Part 2: The Solution

We had a lot of fun tonight with the message!  Four of our leaders were characters in monologues that represented four different types of students that come to youth group:  "Mr. Fun," "Passive Christian," "Non-Christian,"  and "The Christian with a Spirit of Expectancy."  Now these are large generalizations I know, but they do paint a picture of what students get out of youth group because of what they put into it.  That goes for their spiritual life as well.

Basically, we covered the beginning of Acts where some people made fun of the apostles because they were speaking in different languages - a result of the Holy Spirit descending on them (Acts 2:13).  More so than any other age group, teenagers struggle with trying to fit in.  Being serious about one's faith will never be seen as popular by the crowd.  The battle comes down to fitting in or going against the crowd.  Very few choose to go against the crowd.  I know, as a teenager, I didn't like standing out.

We talked about two things that are important as Christians:  prayer and unity.  We should be people who pray before there is a major catastrophe in our lives.  And we should be unified with one another.

A divided church will never conquer a unified Hell.

~Jeanne Mayo

When we talk about each other behind their backs or have our own best interest in mind, we are already defeated.  Let's choose prayer and unity.

Questions for discussion as a family

  1. How big of a role does prayer play in your life?
  2. Why is it important that we are unified as a family?
  3. Why is it important that the church remain unified?
  4. Have you ever been made fun of for being a Christian?
  5. Have you ever turned your back on the crowd in order to choose to follow Jesus?
